F YouTube, Viddler Is The Sh*t!
By Steve Poland • February 29, 2008
Seriously, the thing I think is the coolest ever is what Viddler has done with their videos — users can add comments throughout a video. It’s interesting to watch a video and see all the user comments pop-up as commentary throughout the video.
Here is one by the lovely iJustine. And then the video page itself has a list of all the comments with RSS of course. Just way totally cool. You can also put tags throughout and advertisers can place an ad where there are tags.

Got something to say?

Agreed. The ONLY upside to youtube (right now) is their traffic.
Viddler is great. They are by far my favorite video sharing site currently out there.
Very cool… thanks for the tip.
Interesting idea and I like the monetization idea with the tags…
only problem is that when a video had accumulated a sizeable # of comments, you couldn’t read them anymore… as something else was popping up just as you tried to comprehend the first comment… not to mention how you now were no longer paying attention to the main video.
Eventually you learn to filter the pop-ups at the bottom due to the number of comment items… and with that you visually filter the ad units as well.
i really don’t need to see that Vader96341 thought “lol, yikes” at timeline:2:15 six months ago… i just don’t need that information slowing down my consumption of video content. It’s irrelevant. (Viddler crashes my browser constantly, and I’m a web developer so I’m not using an old 386 here… I have an above average system and the fact that viddler brings it to it’s knees almost every time it gets to the first “comment” is unacceptable. So: F Viddler, You tube is the Sh*t.)
perhaps bloggers need a plugin to inject all these comments directly into their blog post exactly where the comment is relevant? Is that a stupid idea? Yup. and in 2.5 years you will be seeing that plugin offered and enough people are gonna say “wow, this is revolutionary… this is awesome”… and it wont be either of those things…it will just “be”. Just like Viddler.
Furthermore, honestly, who DIDNT think of the Viddler “idea” long before? I think most of us (developers) thought of it at some point… we were just unwilling to apprehend a concept that is destined to be unscalable. Perhaps I should learn from that, and go ahead and start developing the aforementioned blog comment concept. (wo0t… i iz antruh-pwn-eeer.)
