I recently started an ideas site at http://www.ideatagging.com. It features a game where I (or a reader) submit clues (tags) to an idea and invite readers to try and work out what the idea is. It’s fun but as with most new blogs, finding regular traffic is a challenge. Do try it out.

This made my night — I just recently started a blog, and was thinking that I should post some of my ideas. I did some searching this evening to see what else was out there, and this blog is exactly the kind of thing I was looking for. This post with the comments just gave me even more reading to do.

Isn’t what you speak of basically the concepts behind Cambrian House?

They may be more about putting together something tangible (software/desktop wares are tangible?) and then marketing and selling them. But from all I’ve gathered over there, this is pretty much what they are doing, short of my knowing how a potential investor might interact with their system.

And if they aren’t doing this, then I think we need to do it!

Yeah, there are plenty of these idea sites out there (and I think they are fun and valuable resources for brainstorming). What we need is to figure out the “99% perspiration” part. An idea is just a seed of a business. Someone needs to plant it, water it, dump some horse$hit on it (management), and tend to it. *THEN* you have something.

How about a website full of mercenaries (as in, those guys that are paid to fight wars that they may or may not be interested in), willing to throw their bodies at any idea that someone wants to fund. And when they get an assignment, they come back with an estimate as to how well the project will succeed (in the market). At that point, the funder can say “go” or “no go”.

The mercenary teams that have the best track record (as measured against their own prediction of success) will move up the charts and be in high demand.

If I have an idea, and bounce it off the team with a great record, and they tell me “it’ll cost $500K, and will return this net cash flow over 3 years: 75K, 125K, 300K” I can quickly make an assessment whether I want to “go for it” (as an investor). And if I say “Go”, then the mercenary moves from “estimator” to “project manager”, and pulls it off.

Now THAT would be cool.

And PS, a project that has a break-even in 3 years, but an accellerating growth rate may be a great venture!
