What makes a Serial Web Ideapreneur?

When you get a “great” idea, do you rush to register the domain? (How many domains do you have? I have about 65, trimmed down from 85). Do you print business cards before formulating a marketing strategy? (I have at least 10 business cards I have designed in past years). Do you bounce ideas off your family or friends and they bring up random subjects, which suggests they are totally sick of hearing about your ideas? Do you hate to discuss your idea, because you think it’s 100% original and could make billions?!

What attributes do you think make up a serial web ideapreneur? Are you one?

You pretty much have it pinned down – I have 39 domains (just sold one earlier today) that were all legitimate efforts I was working on (not just domains to resell).

I find myself constantly working on some sort of project. I tend to work on it for 2 weeks, then get frustrated with some aspect of it (the backend, the design, database structure) – I delete it all and start all over (or move on to the next big idea).

I’ve learned – if I come across some idea that pans out and holds my interest long enough – it must be golden and I’ll give it everything I’ve got come that point.

I come up with ideas ALL the time. I have pursued some of them in the past and registered a few domains but not too many. The process I go through in order to decide to move on an idea or not is to share it with a few trusted friends whose business acumen I respect. Based on the result of the conversations I move forward or not.

I got about 5 domains atm. When i get an idea (good-great) i’m checking google, look for bigger problems and if its still good I ask for some feedback of my friends.
Then I go for it, or I post it at Cambrian House when I’m lazy.

well, I’ve gone through 5 or 6 domains in a few years, and countless different formulas / ideas. I just went “Live” with a project that I’ve been thinking about for several years. I also have a few boxes of business cards. Meanwhile, my most productive “business” yet, PHP / MySQL development, has no business cards.

[...] Inspiration has hit after reading all the way through this thread on Darren’s ProBlogger.com. I’m immediately going to register RecoveringBlogger.com (yeah it is available so if YOU really want it, be my guest ;) , just don’t tell my friend, Steve over at TechquilaShots.com about my getting yet another new domain! ) [...]

When a good domain name comes into my mind, I register it first before deciding what to do with it. This is really not a good move, and hence I have more than 20 domains under my belt.

Then, on the other hand, when u have a good idea, u want to register a domain name, u often come out with not so ideal domain name that should be associated with it.

Wonder why? This is the ideapreneur BLOCK?

  • http://www.vestedventures.com Steve Poland

Rulepark — I hear that. I’ve wasted more hours than I care to remember fumbling over a good name for a good idea. One of my more later purchases (past year) I really adore — “Vyous” — get it, ‘your views’? vyou / view. I’ll be posting some of the ideas I’ve had for that domain soon.

Yes, I have 25 domains registered. I’ll use a few, but most will just expire. I’ve read some good advice for the serial ideapreneur. If you get a “great” idea, sit on it for a week. If it’s still nagging at you at the end of the week, it might be worth taking to the next level.

yes I am! I have all symptoms you’ve described + “I wish I live in Silicon Valley where grass is green and VC’s are easier” :) I’ve more than 30 domains. It’s *a little* easier in Poland to register a domain, you don’t feel that entire world dictionary + klingonian + all permutations of less than 6 chars were registered.

The problem is of course execution. Sometimes it stops when the domain is registered. I’ve got domain, I’ve got idea, my friends said I’m bright guy, why I should work to turn idea into reality? :-)

Very insightful post! Also reminded me to register some domains. demomode.net … great name… I have no idea what to put under this domain. But we, serial ideapreneurs are running in demo mode, aren’t we?

  • rulepark

Mr. Poland, I am actually having this idea about contributing the domains to the blog, meaning, list out the name and then let the reader here discuss what idea should be done about it. What you think?

It would be fun and ideapreneuring…

I currently own 10 domains. Some of them have been developed for businesses that are doing alright. I will usually buy a domain after coming up with an idea, then I start development.

I have about 55 domain names, but only about 5-6 in active use right now. Many I don’t have plans for, many I do, some are old names for things which I have discarded in favor of better ones. Often times I’ll register a domain with no idea what to use it for, or sometimes I’ll have an idea and come up with a list of domains and register my top 4 or 5 and decide on one later. ;)

My favorite domain might still be Administr8.com … which I have owned unused since 2001 or so. ;) I plan to figure out what to use it for some day. :D

Steve, I think rulepark’s idea would be a great new feature on your site. What if you set up a section that simply allowed for us readers to either email you the actual domain name, and you post it up or you could have a general post that we then commented on with the domain that we own (so it’s protected for those of us [me!] that think something might happen if someone knows the name of the domain I own; silly, I know. I’m planning on going to Poland’s therapy class at the recoveringBlogger.com institute ;) )

Then you could pick the interesting ones, start a very directed discussion in your community here about the domain owners ideas and how to expand, refine, improve, and generally make it happen. You just never know what might transpire for someones little baby of a notion if they get the right nurturing!

It would be an all new project for us reader at techquilashots.com. Yes, it might nurture to something unexpected.

  • Leddo

I like the way the comments have fleshed out a new idea – basically a community where people can list ideas/domains, and then allow members to contribute to the idea to come up with something workable, or a decision that it is just a pipe dream…
Maybe an option that when real specifics start being discussed, of going into a private area where only registered members for that “idea” are allowed access.
    Nice One.

I don’t register as much as I used to. I have two domains I think are somewhat witty – endzwell.com (“All’s well that end’s well”) and lifehoop.com.

I have a thick sketchbook of ideas that have everything from logo mockups to business models and names of people doing similar stuff, etc.

  • http://boldlygoing.com James D Kirk

    Steve, Leddo’s onto something there…

I’d be an active part of such a scenario. Could easily see that sort of community development moving from idea to proof of concept to company organization to VC’d… And who’d be perfect to be involved, but the people that made up that ideas ongoing development.

TS’s could post excerpts of highlights to the public accessible pages and continue to garner input as the project moves forward.

i want to know how do you evaluate domains. I mean i have a domain named pirellimodels.com which seems to be very generic but i am unable to sell it till date..
